Brothers plot new IHOPs, a sports bar chain in Maryland

Sanjay Patel doesn’t quite know how to describe himself. Restaurateur? Developer?

He and his brother, Neal, are actually both. They run Imperio Groups, a Virginia-based real estate development company that specializes in franchised restaurants, hospitality properties, commercial real estate and consulting. The company, which just opened a new IHOP in Aberdeen, is planning on opening more of the pancake restaurant chain in Maryland and is also working on creating local sports bars in the state.

“Maryland is a big part of our operation,” Sanjay Patel told me in a recent interview. “I moved down to Virginia from New Jersey about a decade ago. Everything I seem to be doing since then has been in Maryland.”
