Sparrows Point Redevelopment Expected to Create $2.9B in Economic Activity

A study released Thursday evening showed that the redevelopment of Sparrows Point into an international trade hub will result in a total of 17,000 new jobs over the coming 10 years.

The economic impact study was conducted by the local Sage Policy Group for Tradepoint Atlantic, the new owners of the 3,100-acre former industrial site in Dundalk.

In it, the researchers concluded that when the old steel mill site is fully rebuilt and refitted with commerce based on the deep water port, rail lines and Interstate 95 nearby, it will spark $1.8 billion in direct economic activity from tenants and businesses.

The growth would also lead to an estimated $2.9 billion in regional economic activity. In total, the number of “direct, permanent jobs” at the Sparrows Point site will be 9,500, the report says. The 17,000 figure includes indirect jobs, those created offsite but are spurred by the new economic activity at the project.
