Outgoing Commander Foley’s Fort Meade Legacy Lauded

When Col. Brian Foley took over as the garrison commander of Fort Meade in 2013, there were several questions surrounding the country’s third-largest army base.

Inside the BWI Airport Marriott on Thursday, much of the talk is how in his three years at the helm, the base has avoided funding and employment cuts that other outposts have faced. Back in 2013, the decrease in military’s presence overseas and across-the-board budget cuts that led the Pentagon to furlough civilian employees that summer loomed over Fort Meade and the military at large.

But Fort Meade’s emergence as a key player in the country’s cyber security initiative kept it relevant and solvent, according to several speakers at an event honoring his announced Aug. 4 departure from the post.
