Chesapeake Innovation Center Announces Startup Technology Competition

Odenton, Maryland – (May 17, 2016) – Today the Chesapeake Innovation Center (CIC) announced that it is taking applications for its new startup technology competition, the Chesapeake Innovation Challenge.  Funding for this competition is made possible with support from the Maryland Department of Commerce.

Selected companies will receive a no-cost membership in the CIC which includes collaborative or office space as appropriate, a value of up to $3,000, and participation in the CIC’s incubation program.  The center’s curriculum for early stage companies offers business development guidance and networking opportunities with regional innovators and investors. Also, as part of the CIC’s partnership with the Chesapeake Regional Tech Council, companies will receive mentorship and advisory assignments with experts in such matters as finance, legal, accounting, sales, marketing and technology assistance. In addition, companies will participate in a pitch event with a panel made up of government agency representatives, financing experts and commercial stakeholders.

“Given that the CIC is located in the heart of national cyber, big data intelligence and analytics, we are able to provide valuable resources as we cultivate innovations with our existing members,” said Michael Tentnowski, Executive Director of the CIC. “Thanks to the Maryland Department of Commerce, we can expand our community of entrepreneurs that can benefit from our program offerings and add to the region’s growing technology ecosystem.”

“Our support of the Chesapeake Innovation Challenge is an investment in Maryland’s future,” said Mike Gill, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Commerce. “Across our state, innovative companies – many of which have come out of Maryland’s network of business incubators – are developing and adopting technologies that are changing the world. Through this competition, even more entrepreneurs will have access to the resources they need to address the most compelling challenges of our time, and to grow and thrive in Maryland.”

The Chesapeake Innovation Challenge is particularly focused on emerging technology companies developing innovation in the following areas: cyber, big data, cloud services, health IT, Internet of Things and security solutions.

Competition rules require that an applicant must be an established business entity with the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation.  Also, the applicant must have at least a preliminary business plan and must submit an executive summary with the application.  Women, minority and veteran owned businesses are encouraged to apply.  The application and other details are available on www.cic-tech.org.

The application deadline is June 15, 2016.  Winners are expected to be announced the week of June 27.



As a program of the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, the CIC helps to attract, retain and grow emerging technology companies Maryland.
