AACC Names Two New Academic Deans

Karen Cook to Head Business and Law; Bruce Bowman to Direct Sciences and Technology

Anne Arundel Community College has named Karen L. Cook, J.D., as the new dean for the School of Business and Law and Bruce Bowman, Ph.D., as the dean of the School of Sciences and Technology.

Until her appointment as dean, Cook was director of AACC’s Legal Studies Institute, professor of law and the college’s federal compliance officer. As director, some of her key initiatives have been creating the continuing legal education (CLE) program for attorneys, paralegals and mediators statewide; forming partnerships with many external organizations and agencies; ensuring that the Paralegal Studies degree and certificate programs were approved by the American Bar Association; managing the Law and Jurisprudence pre-law program, and expanding the legal studies internship program. From April 2013 to December 2014, she took administrative leave to serve in the Neuman administration as chief administrative officer where she managed the day-to-day operations of Anne Arundel County government. She was the first woman to serve in that position. Prior to her employment at AACC, Cook held other positions in law, government and business.

Cook is on the executive committee of the AACC Foundation and the board of directors of the Anne Arundel Bar Association (AABA). She is a past president of the AABA and was on the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Bar Association. In 2009, she was named a Daily Record Leadership in Law winner, the first attorney from a community college in Maryland to be honored.

Bowman comes to AACC from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, where he was dean of the School of Business. His academic background also includes serving as dean of the Division of Science, Technology and Business at Northern Virginia Community College and dean of the David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. He also has taught graduate-level courses in the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering at George Washington University.

Bowman served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He then spent time in private industry before turning to academia. His doctorate is in civil engineering from Columbia University and he was an assistant professor in the Department of Systems Engineering for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point for three years while still in the military.

In reorganizing its programs last year, AACC’s Division of Learning created a fifth school. In addition to these two schools, AACC offers programs in the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, the School of Health Sciences and the School of Liberal Arts.
