Another hotel is the latest project in the plans to revitalize College Park

The old Koons Ford showroom sat empty for a decade on one of Prince George County’s busiest corridors. On Tuesday, workers began demolishing it to make way for a hotel and retail development that officials say supports their new vision for the once auto-centric character of Route 1.

Southern Management Corp. plans to turn the three-acre site at 8315 Baltimore Ave., just blocks from the University of Maryland’s main entrance, into a 152-room hotel with ground-level shops and a free-standing CVS pharmacy.

David Hillman, chief executive of Southern Management, said the $40 million investment in the vacant parcel inside the Capital Beltway will fulfill a growing demand for high-quality accommodations in the university community.
