It’s been a long time in the making, a lifetime as a matter of fact, but on June 30, 2015, Mayor Craig A. Moe, received the Maryland Municipal League’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the convention dinner in Ocean City.

Nearly every City of Laurel Department Head, City Council member, and members of the City Attorney’s Office were on hand to celebrate this prestigious award with the Mayor.

A dedicated volunteer for nearly his entire life, Mayor Moe started as a firefighter with the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department. He then became Chief and was soon elected President.  After 20 years he gained life member status and he is still volunteering at the LVFD to this day! Mayor Moe also served as President of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association, chaired the Committee that produced a book detailing the history of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department for its 100th Anniversary and served several terms on the Maryland State Firemen’s Association Executive Committee.

Most people would have been satisfied with that list of accomplishments, but that wasn’t enough for Mayor Moe! He started his municipal service as an active volunteer in City events. He served for many years as a member of Laurel’s Fourth of July Committee. And in 1988 ran and won a seat on the Laurel City Council.

During his 12 years on the City Council, Mayor Moe served on many Citizens Advisory Committees and also as President of the City Council. As a City Councilmember, he sponsored juvenile curfew legislation and worked it through the City Council to gain its passage, which became the model for other governments throughout the Country to use for their legislation.

Then in April of 2002, Mr. Moe ran for the Mayor’s Office and has held that position continuously since then.

Mayor Moe’s promise was to bring Laurel’s government to the people and he has spent the last 13 years doing just that by opening City Hall on Tuesday evenings, holding “City Halls in the Park,” growing the Laurel Police Department, making major improvements to City Parks,  and implementing other great programs and services that has put the City of Laurel on the map. He is especially proud of the revitalized Laurel TV and the enhanced community outreach the public access station now affords the city’s residents.

Mayor Craig A. Moe, born and raised in Laurel, has proven his hometown roots have taken hold and flourished and he has given back 110% to the residents and employees of the City of Laurel. Congratulations to Mayor Craig A. Moe on his much deserved Lifetime Achievement Award with the Maryland Municipal League!
