AACC’s HCAT Institute Director Receives Top Industry Honor

Mary Ellen Mason Presented with the 2015 Otto Schellhase Award

Mary Ellen Mason, director of the Hotel, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute at Anne Arundel Community College, was presented the Restaurant Association of Maryland’s 2015 Otto Schellhase Award at its Stars of the Industry Awards Gala April 12, in Cambridge.

The award, named for Otto Schellhase who served on the RAM board for more than 40 years, recognizes the recipient’s contributions to the association, its Education Foundation and the industry as a whole. Mason serves on the board of the Maryland Tourism Education Foundation. A former chair of the board of the RAM Education Foundation, she is an active member of the American Culinary Federation.

“In the fast-paced world of the restaurant industry, it takes a certain type of individual to volunteer their time on top of their already busy schedule,” wrote Marshall Weston Jr., president and CEO of the Restaurant Association of Maryland, in announcing the award.

Mason, an Annapolis resident, owned and operated Occasion Extraordinaire, Ltd., a full-service catering company, before joining AACC in 1990 as a part-time instructor in the HCAT Institute. Now, she handles the strategic planning and management of the large institute which offers credit degree and certificate programs, continuing education and workforce training and a variety of avocational courses within the hospitality and culinary discipline. She has a Master of Business Administration from Strayer University and is certified as a Foodservice Management Professional (FMP) by the National Restaurant Association.
