County Executive Rushern Baker, Bowie Mayor G. Frederick Robinson, and Brian Berman, of Berman Enterprises, owner of Bowie Marketplace Shopping Center, will host a joint press conference on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at 11 a.m. to announce the future opening of a Harris Teeter grocery store in Bowie. The store will be the anchor of a new shopping center built on the site of the existing shopping center, which was built almost fifty years ago.

Bowie Marketplace Shopping Center has been a center in decline for more than a decade. Its fortunes began to turn around when the property was bought by Berman Enterprises in 2013 and the company actively began working on a plan to raze the existing structures and rebuild a new shopping center on the site.

Lining up a grocery store was a critical piece in rebuilding the center and proved very challenging. Because a successful Marketplace is key to the economic health of Bowie and the County and very important to the Prince George’s County’s quest to bring more high quality shopping options to County residents, both governments worked with the developer to create a package of incentives that would attract such a tenant to the site. Last week, after months of negotiations with Kroger, the parent company of Harris Teeter, Berman Enterprises and the grocer signed an agreement to bring Harris Teeter to Bowie. Baker, Robinson, and Berman will speak about their respective roles in this process at the press conference.
