How Did They Do That?

Marketers Share Their Award-winning Campaigns

One marketer needed to promote a local event connected to the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington when a huge national celebration was happening just 30 miles away. Another was charged with promoting a program for a limited audience. And a third needed to garner publicity for a small independent school’s sustainability project. All succeeded, with publicity getting national attention and/or earning major awards.

So, how did they do that?

Come to the Oct. 23 meeting of the Central Chesapeake Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and learn the strategies behind these winning campaigns, as well as what they would do differently next time.

WHEN and WHERE: Noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at Union Jack’s British Pub, 2072 Somerville Road, Annapolis, next to the Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole.

HOW: Cost is $25 for members, $30 for members, including lunch. WHO: Panelists include:

  • Marc Apter of Image Power Inc., for his Foot Soldiers Campaign, ordinary Anne Arundel County residents who participated in the 1963 March on Washington, when a permanent tribute was dedicated to their civil rights participation ; campaign was honored by the PRSA’s National Capitol Chapter with a Thoth Award for Pro Bono Public Relations.
  • Donna Cole of Annapolis Creative for her campaign that spotlighted the Tiny Houses sustainability project at the Key School, which drew national as well as local attention.
  • Susan Gumula, marketing coordinator at Anne Arundel Community College, for the college’s promotion of a new program to teach people to be casino dealers in anticipation of new gambling operations opening; the project won the national first place award in digital communications from the National Council of Marketing and Public Relations.
