UMUC cybersecurity team wins an international competition

The University of Maryland University College, a largely online institution that targets the adult education market, has no football or basketball team to stir school spirit. But it does have the Cyber Padawans.

That UMUC squad, which is comprised of students, faculty and alumni in the field of cybersecurity, was celebrating a victory Tuesday in an international competition that tested its hacking and cyberdefense skills.

The Global CyberLympics brought various academic and professional cybersecurity teams from around the world to Barcelona to test their hacking mettle. The finals were basically a game of “capture the flag,” with teams vying simultaneously to penetrate and hold key positions within a complex computer system.
