Who teaches the teachers about money?

As Maryland students head back to school to learn reading, writing and arithmetic, one Baltimore-area organization wants to remind everyone that the kids should be studying stocks, savings and interest, too.

The group, the Maryland Council on Economic Education, is based at Towson University. Its mission is to make sure students learn to be financially literate — that they’re learning the economic skills they’ll need as adults.

MCEE coordinates programs students see directly, such as the Stock Market Game, which simulates investing in stocks and mutual funds over a ten-week period. But the organization also works to teach teachers. And that, its leaders said, is as important now as it’s ever been.
