CSX deal to build railroad intermodal facility in city scrapped by state

The Port of Baltimore’s hopes for a site that would have allowed double-stacked containers to leave the city by rail without having to travel through the too-low Howard Street tunnel were dashed with the state’s decision to scrap a deal for CSX Transportation Inc. to build an intermodal facility in the city.

The state Department of Transportation said Thursday night that CSX was unable to address the concerns of the agency, the city and residents and businesses near the Southwest Baltimore site for the facility.

“I made clear from the start, I wanted a project that was compatible with the neighboring community,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Thursday. “While I support the continued strength of industry at the port, it can’t be at the expense of our residents and local businesses.”
